ESPELETTE

Espelette is a village located 24 km from Biarritz, founded by a noble family. Known all over the world for its spice, the Espelette pepper, it welcomes thousands of visitors every year.

During your stay in the Basque Country, you can walk through the streets of the village and admire the Ezpeleta castle, which was originally a much larger building. It is the castle that stands in the centre of the village and now houses the Tourist Information Office and the Town Hall.

Then, if you come on a Wednesday, you will have the opportunity to visit the big market that brings together local producers and craftsmen.

Finally, we advise you to visit the Espelette Chilli Pepper Interpretation Centre which is a 100 m2 space dedicated to the Espelette chilli pepper. You will discover its origins, its history, its terroir, its life cycle but also its characteristics.

AINHOA

Located a few kilometres from Espelette, Ainhoa is classified as one of the most beautiful villages in France. It is also a place of welcome, accommodation and provisioning for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela.

The only street in this village is known for its aligned houses, its coloured facades, which makes the charm of Ainhoa.

SARE

Not far from Ainhoa is Sare, another pretty village in the Basque Country. To get there, you have to go over the Saint Ignace pass, passing through some very beautiful countryside.

In the main square of the village you will find the fronton, the place where Basque pelota is played. It hosts games of Basque pelota, a beautiful farmers' market and all the village activities. All around you will find beautiful houses that house shops, restaurants, the town hall but also cafés and restaurants.

If you are lucky enough to come on the second weekend of September, you can attend the Sare festivals, which combine Basque traditions and festive moments.

LA BASTIDE CLAIRENCE

Located about twenty kilometres from Bayonne, La Bastide Clairence is classified as one of the "Most Beautiful Villages in France". For many years, this village has encouraged the installation of art craftsmen. While walking through the village, you will discover different trades, glass sculptors, weaving looms, old forges, etc.

You will also have the opportunity to discover the pretty arcaded houses, a church, but also a magnificent mill.

SAINT JEAN PIED DE PORT

Situated on the banks of the river Nive, this village is at the foot of the mountains. Its medieval streets are lined with pretty pink sandstone houses with green or red shutters. It has a rich architectural heritage, surrounded by ramparts and a citadel.

Bordered by the Spanish border on one side and by the valley of Saint Etienne de Baïgorry on the other, this region is crossed by the road to Santiago de Compostela and the GR10.

It is also the country of the AOP Irouléguy, where you can admire the terraced vineyards on the mountainside.
