What to do in the basque country when it rains ?

Today, long walks along the beach are compromised ; not an excuse to avoid discovering the region and fully enjoy your holidays. When it rains in the Basque Country, it is a good excuse to explore the territory differently. The Basque culture is rich of its history, gastronomy, language and landscape.

Culture and history :


Through the years, the Basque culture has established itself as one of the richest and most diverse culture in France. Wandering the region, you will discover many years of History preciously preserved. Our local guides will have the pleasure of sharing the richness of the terroir with each of you.


  • The Aquarium of Biarritz

A lovely activity which will amaze the whole family. You will discover many marine animals and assist at the seals feeding and rays ballet. 


  • Cité de l’Océan in Biarritz

We stay on the aquatic theme but completely different entertainment ; the City of Ocean shows the Ocean universe, in a fun way by testing 3D experiences and simulating surfing. Something to initiate the whole family to this awesome sport, naturally very popular on the coast. 


  • Visit the Basque Museum in Bayonne 

A museum full of history with more than 2000 artworks about Basque culture, located in the center of Bayonne. Why don’t you do a little detour to visit the cute local shops on the other side of the river ?


  • The Abbadia castle in Hendaye 

Gorgeously located on the edge of the Corniche coast, this castle has been built between 1864 and 1884 for Antoine d’Abbadie, ethnologist and geographer, and represents the neogothic architecture of the time.

A place full of history which also have a beautiful parc that would be a shame not to visit, even during a rainy day.


  • Villa Arnaga in Cambo-les-bains 

Museum dedicated to Edmond Rostand, famous author of Cyrano de Bergerac, who lived there during many years. Its gardens are as gorgeous as the house itself. Take the opportunity to visit Cambo-les-bains, very cute village popular for its spa treatments. 


  • Concerts / Basque choirs

3 concerts halls share the musical program : the Atabal and Gare du Midi in Biarritz and the Scène Nationale du Sud Aquitain in Bayonne. You will find the whole program on their website.

If you prefer more traditional music, the Basque choirs will perform during local celebrations or masses. Goosebumps guaranteed ! 


  • Guggenheim museum in Bilbao 

Bilbao being only 1h30 away, what a shame to not push a little further down the trip to the Guggenheim museum, one of the 5 world museums, famous for its atypical architecture and splendid artwork exhibitions. While you are on this side of the region, make the most of it and stop by San Sebastian to eat some tasty tapas ! 


  • Visit a manufacturer of chistera in Anglet

During your stay in the Basque Country, you will be able to assist a chistera tournament, this typical object looking like a big wicker glove. For the curious ones, you can visit the only chistera workshop in France… a beautiful moment of sharing !


Sport : 


The Basque Country is also a very sportive region where many professionals (or just sport fans) take advantage of their holidays to come and decompress in the practice of their favorite sport.


  • Ice skating in Anglet 

For those who like to slide ! Ideally located in front of the beach, you will also be able to watch hockey tournaments whose warm atmosphere brings curious spectators all year long.


  • Trampoline park in St Jean de Luz

1600m² of indoor playground to make the whole family jump ! 


  • Padel indoor in Tarnos 

For the sportive ones who want to steam off ! And to reward you, a bar is available to rehydrate (of course…).


Gastronomy and making :


When you think holidays on the Basque coast, we immediately think : gastronomy ! And we get it … on top of eating out in charming local restaurants, you can participate in their making. 


  • Visit the Chocolate museum in Bayonne

You are not into museum ? I dare you to resist the temptation of tasting the delicious chocolates of the Atelier du Chocolat and assist their production. Count 1h30 for the visit.


  • Participate in a culinary / cosmetic / cocktail class

  • Visit a cider house in Ascain 

The artisanal cider house Txopinondo welcome you in a rustic and warming environment where you will be able to taste the famous Sagrano, the oldest drink in the region, and discover all the secrets of production. Kids will not be left out as they will drink tasting apple juices.

We all know it, the sea breeze makes us feel refreshed ! Moreover, the Basque Country has established itself as a region with many high quality spa and well-being centers. Something to relax and spend very relaxing holidays.
